What is Botox and how does it work?

Botulinum Toxin is a neurotoxic protein that prevents the release of the neurotransmitter ‘acetylcholine’, causing localised, temporary relaxation of the chosen muscles.

Injection of Botulinum Toxin into the muscles underneath the chosen wrinkled area causes the relaxation of those muscles, resulting in the appearance of smoother skin. The results can be visible 2-14 days after treatment, depending on the type of product used, and the technique of the clinician, and is different in each person.

What areas can be treated with Botox?

Botox is most commonly used to treat the wrinkles and fine lines that appear on the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes. It is also used to treat other areas of the face, such as the corners of the mouth and the chin.

Botulinum Toxin can also be used for migraines, muscle spasticity, muscle disorders and excessive sweating

How long do the results last?

The effects typically last 2-4 months, with some clients reporting the effects lasting 6 months or more. The duration will depend on the individual and the area being treated.

Is Botox treatment safe?

Botox treatment’s side effects are very rare and lessened further if you choose a suitably experienced and qualified practitioner. It has a proven record of use in clinical settings and an excellent safety record.

Are there any side effects?

For most people, the injection will only cause slight, local pain and a little bit of tenderness.

Immediately after the injection, there may be a small amount of local swelling and slight bruising which usually subsides within 48 hours. Side effects of these treatments are extremely rare and on some occasions, there may be unexpected benefits such as a reduction in headaches due to the muscles in the forehead relaxing.

How often can I have treatments?

Depending on how long your results last, we usually recommend an interval of 3-6 months between treatments. If you have had previous treatments in the same area then the effects may last longer.

We will advise on the optimal schedule for your Botox treatments based on your individual needs and goals.

Who can have Botox treatment?

Although Botox Treatment is primarily used for treating wrinkles in men and women, it can also be used for migraines, muscle spasticity, muscle disorders and excessive sweating. It is estimated hundreds of thousands of people in the UK have this procedure each year.
